1. Refuse the idea "The readers is simply a receiver who plays a passive role in the written commmunication process." with as much contradictory evidence as possible from the chapter.
Reading is not a passive skill. Reading is a receptive skill. The reader needs to be engaged with what they are reading and to respond to the content, not just the language. Reading is not just decoding what the writer wrote. Reading is to reassemble the meaning from the text by using the reader's schema.
2. Explain each term of "Reading Process"
Schema Shared assumption Presupposition Prediction
1) Schema: Schema is a reader's stored knowledge which derives from all the particular experience he/she has had.
2) Shared assumption: Shared assumptions are common presuppositons between reader and writer. The reader and the writer have something in common and they share their common experience and knowledge. If they don't have anything in common, it is difficult for the reader to understand the reading text. Shared assumption includes not only knowledge of language but also attitudes, beliefs, value, etc.
3) Presupposition: Presupposition is the writer's shema that might share with the reader or not. It is unstated in the text so sometimes the reader is unaware of it.
